Introduction

The national context that describes the current phase of the nursing profession in Italy can be understood through the words of Barbara Mangiacavalli (President of FNOPI – National Federation of Orders of Nursing Professions): ‘The nursing profession must take a leap forward, reclaim its specificity and specialization. It needs to clearly communicate and highlight, moving beyond the flattening associated with old models and obsolete hierarchies, its character as an intellectual profession and its ability to exponentially increase the quality of care. To do this, numerous obstacles that the profession has encountered along its path must be overcome, reducing the attractiveness of the profession with inadequate organizational models and the presence of inappropriate activities.’

Marie Manthey, the creator of the Primary Nursing model, well understood the importance of making a precise choice to allow nurses to provide quality care by placing the patient at the center of the care process.
With the desire to bring about a change in nursing care, the Primary Nursing project was born at the European Institute of Oncology in Milan.

The course aims to provide the appropriate tools to understand the Primary Nursing methodology, allowing the introduction of new roles and new dynamics in nursing care, emphasizing the attribution and acceptance of personal responsibility, presenting step by step the phases that have allowed the implementation of this method within the European Institute of Oncology.
